No one wants a makeup mess on their big day! Here are four tips to help you keep your makeup on lockdown and looking flawless all day – from the altar to the bouquet toss.
1. Prep your skin beforehand
The night before the big day, set a few extra minutes aside to prep and pamper your skin. This will ensure your makeup has a smooth canvas to adhere to and allow it to stay put longer. Cleanse your skin to remove any makeup and dirt and then follow with a gentle exfoliator to get rid of any pesky dry patches that may cause your makeup to apply unevenly.
If you are suffering from blemishes, use a clay-based mask to rid your skin of impurities and leave it looking its best. The Origins Clear Improvement Mask does a great job of clearing out clogged pores and calming any active blemishes. If you’ve been particularly stressed and sleep deprived, opt for a calming chamomile or honey based face mask like this one to tackle any redness or inflammation. Dry skinned gals – opt for a rich moisture infusing mask or oil to ensure your skin’s thirst is quenched for the next day. Aveda’s Intensive Hydrating Mask is a long-time favourite of mine! After you’ve rinsed off your mask follow with a light moisturizer and make sure you get lots of sleep before the big day ahead!
In the a.m. use a gentle cleanser and follow with a rejuvenating toner to wake up and brighten your skin. Pop on a bit of gel or water-based moisturizer and you’re prepped and ready for makeup!
Primer is one of the best secret weapons for long wearing makeup, and there’s a long laundry-list of benefits it offers. Foundation primer does a great job of filling in pores and smoothing the surface of the skin, allowing foundation to apply smoothly and evenly. It acts as a barrier between the skin and foundation to prevent foundation from oxidizing and turning orange, controls shine, brings radiance to the skin and adds hours to makeup’s wear time. When choosing a primer, be sure to keep your skin type in mind and look for one that is geared towards your skin’s needs.
Oily skin? Go with a mattifying primer that will keep shine at bay. The Cover FX Mattifying Primer does a great job of making sure makeup stays put and leaves a long-lasting, shine-free finish.
If you have combination skin keep a look out for lightweight, oil free formulas like Laura Mercier’s Oil Free Foundation Primer
If your skin is on the dry side opt for a radiance boosting, moisturizing formula like Clarins’ Beauty Flash Balm which will keep your foundation in place and prevent it from flaking and clinging to dry patches.
Priming isn’t just for foundation! Eye primers are another great way to insure the longevity of your makeup. Just like a face primer, an eyeshadow primer will even out the surface of the skin and create a smooth, even base for shadows and liners. Eye primers are also great for camouflaging any lid discolouration or veining on the lids, preventing eyshadow from creasing, and allowing powder colours to apply vibrantly. This will keep your eyeshadow and liner crease (and smudge!) free through the laughing, tears and dancing. Two great options are the Urban Decay Primer Potion and the Too Faced Shadow Insurance.
3. Apply in thin, buildable layers
In lieu of a heavy cream-based foundation, try opting for a tinted moisturizer or a light, buildable foundation like Chanel’s Vitalumiere Aqua. Apply a small amount of product at a time in thin layers until you achieve your desired coverage. Applying this way will prevent caking and make sure your makeup doesn’t slide right off of your face before the “I do’s!”. Be careful – trying to cover every spot and blemish with foundation can lead to over-applying cause foundation to cake up later in the day. Instead, once your skin tone is evened out, go in with a heavy-duty concealer like Make Up For Ever’s Full Cover Concealer to cover any pesky spots that are still peeking through. Apply the concealer in small amounts only where needed for a flawless finish. *TIP: Warm up your concealer on the back of your hand before applying. This will allow it to blend more seamlessly and sink in to the skin for long-lasting wear.
To keep your pout in place all day apply your lip colour in thin layers, blotting between each, and build until you reach the desired intensity.
4. Set everything in place!
Choose a light-weight loose or pressed powder (depending on your preference) to keep your base locked in place and prevent shine throughout the day. Apply with a fan brush and use a very light hand to avoid caking.
Once you have applied the rest of your makeup, set it in spray with a long-wearing finishing spray like Urban Decay’s All Nighter Spray and you’re off to the altar!
